By Resolution No. 1032 of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated December 2, 2025, the State Puppet Theater, operating under the Department of Culture of the city of Almaty, has been granted “academic” status. This significant milestone recognizes the theater’s longstanding contribution to the development of national culture and the spiritual education of younger generations.

Founded in 1935 at the initiative of the prominent statesman Temirbek Zhurgenov, the theater has remained one of the country’s key cultural centers for 90 years. Over the decades, it has served as a gateway to the magical world of fairy tales for young audiences and as a space for profound reflection and aesthetic discovery for adults. Today, the theater’s repertoire is shaped in accordance with contemporary audience demands, combining high artistic quality with educational and moral value.

A special place in the repertoire is occupied by performances based on Kazakh folk tales and legends, such as "Orteke", "The Secret of Nauryz", "Ur, Tokpak!", "Er Tostik", "Kanbak Shal", and "The Golden Man". These productions introduce children to the rich cultural heritage of the Kazakh people while fostering patriotism, courage, and kindness. Alongside these works, the theater stages adaptations of world literary classics, including "The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats", "Little Red Riding Hood", "The Three Little Pigs", "The Snow Queen", and "Thumbelina", which teach young audiences compassion, care, and humanity. For adult audiences, the repertoire features philosophical and dramatic productions such as "Without a Face", "The Overcoat", "The Old Man and the Sea", "Mother’s Field", "Macbeth. Illusion", and "Romeo and Juliet", encouraging deep reflection and inner dialogue.

One of the theater’s largest cultural initiatives in recent years has been the annual International Puppet Theater Festival “Almaty Puppet Festival.” The festival has transformed Almaty into a significant international platform for puppetry arts. Over the years, creative companies from Spain, Italy, the Czech Republic, Poland, China, India, Bulgaria, Turkey, Russia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan have taken part. The festival has become a vibrant space for professional dialogue, exchange of experience, and creative collaboration — a true celebration of culture for both children and adults.

The theater’s international activities are also developing actively. The company has достойно represented Kazakhstani art at prestigious theater festivals in France, Canada, Bulgaria, and Turkey, where it has received awards and prizes. These achievements strengthen the reputation of Kazakhstan’s puppet theater on the global stage and expand the cultural horizons of national art.

The State Puppet Theater of Almaty looks ahead to new creative explorations, unique premieres, and international projects. The theater intends to continue strengthening its connection with audiences, remaining a dynamic, evolving, and open cultural platform.

Nine decades of dedicated service to the arts, fidelity to national spiritual values, active international cooperation, and unwavering audience appreciation have shaped the high standing the State Puppet Theater holds today. The awarding of “academic” status is a logical culmination of this remarkable journey and a testament to the company’s sustained artistic maturity.
