About the performance
Synopsis
Santiago, an elderly Cuban fisherman, sets out to sea and enters a desperate struggle with a giant marlin. Against nature’s beauty and harshness, his commitment to his dream, hope, and resilience are tested. Through puppetry, Ernest Hemingway’s novella becomes a theatrical reflection on the human refusal to surrender to defeat.
About the theatre
The Almaty State Puppet Theatre was founded in 1935. Alongside children’s fairy tales, the company stages classic works for teenagers and adults. Its repertoire includes productions in Kazakh and Russian. In 2023, the theatre organised the first Almaty Puppet Festival and presented “The Old Man and the Sea” in the programme outside the competition.
