The play tells a story about a ten-year-old orphan, the son of Desht-i-Kypshak people that was taken as a prisoner. With his intelligence and wisdom, he frome a slave becomes the ruler of Egypt know as Sultan az-Zahir Beybarys. Whatever heights he reached, there was always a thoughts of his homeland in his heart. The leitmotive of the play is Beibarys's love for his native land, the steppe, the smell of wormwood. "It is batter to be a slave in a your own land that being a sultan in foreign land" is the message of this play.
