About the performance

“Land of the Ancestors”

The performance takes us back to ancient times, when the Great Tengri ruled the world and shamanism was emerging. It is as though only the traces people left on the earth preserved this story, while the spirit of the wind carried it from one generation to the next…

Long ago, there lived a family with a son named Yerzhurek. This is the story of a little boy who sets out to save his father. Anything is possible when your soul is pure and your heart is brave. If you think of others in trouble, offer a helping hand, and cherish nature and your homeland, the spirits of nature will protect you and help you through difficult times. This was the belief of our ancestors. Today, too, each of us should reflect on who we are, how we act, and how we treat our native land.

About the theatre

The Mangystau Regional Puppet Theatre opened on 6 January 1981 with a production of V. Katayev’s “The Seven-Coloured Flower.” Based in Aktau, the company has presented performances for adults as well as fairy tales for children. Legends of the region, the Kazakh worldview, and national culture hold an important place in its work. The solo performance “Land of the Ancestors” continues this approach, combining puppetry with acting.
